The ‘A Year On The Field’ project looks back on a successful potato year 2024! Even though the conditions for potato cultivation were particularly difficult this year - especially in Europe there were high crop losses - we have learnt a lot about the potato as a field crop, about its cultivation and harvest, as well as about cultural-historical significance of this plant! Take another look at the blog to see if there are any posts that interest you!

Looking at the project's successes to date, it can be said that it has achieved creating an archive platform for traditional knowledge about the crops wheat, flax and potatoes that should not be underestimated, and at the same time has established a network platform that has made it possible to initiate an active dialog between farmers, scientists and museum professionals.
It also became clear that a direct comparison of the respective growers is not always possible and that the time required for data acquisition is extremely high. We would therefore like to propose a slightly modified approach for the new project year. Instead of limiting the focus to reports and experiences from the respective cultivation year, we would like to encourage growers to send us their general experiences with the respective field crop: be it information on specific methods, machines used or tools. We would also like to encourage museums, universities, research institutions and other researchers to send us reports on finds, historical developments and agricultural collections.
Taken together, the aim is to be able to provide an even deeper insight into the respective field crop while at the same time being able to build on old experiences and ultimately not having to be an active grower this year.
Looking ahead, we are delighted to announce that the year 2025 will be dedicated to hay!
